On-Hire and Off-Hire Bunker and Condition Surveys

When a vessel is delivered to charterers or redelivered to owners, both sides need the same figures: how much fuel is on board, and what state the vessel and its holds are in. An independent on-hire or off-hire survey records both.

Charterers and shipowners order these surveys from i4Survey at ports in Turkey, Europe, North Africa and the Far East.

What We Record, and Where

Bunker survey

Fuel remaining on board

Fuel oil and gas oil in each tank, from soundings, temperature and density.

Grades and tanks

Each fuel grade reported separately, tank by tank.

Condition survey

Holds and hatch covers

Cleanliness, damage, and the state of hatch covers and fittings at handover.

Deck, accommodation and equipment

Common Questions

Who orders an on-hire or off-hire survey?
Usually the charterer; owners order them too. The survey is done when the vessel is delivered (on-hire) and again when it is redelivered (off-hire).
What is the difference between a bunker survey and a condition survey?
A bunker survey measures the fuel on board. A condition survey records the state of the holds, the hatch covers and the rest of the vessel. On-hire and off-hire surveys usually include both.
Why does it matter?
The bunkers on board at delivery and redelivery are settled between owners and charterers, and damage found at redelivery is charged to whoever caused it. Without an independent record at both ends, these turn into disputes.
Which ports do you cover?
Every Turkish port; Europe from our hubs in Spain, Italy and the UK; France, Greece, Egypt and Morocco; and the Far East from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam. Our surveyors travel from these hubs to other ports.
What should I send to book a survey?
The vessel's name, the port, the expected delivery or redelivery date, and whether you need the bunker survey, the condition survey or both.
